Dr. Carter's research interests include bilingualism, first and second language acquisition, bilingual lexical representation and production, and the effects of language contact. Specific research topics have focused on lexical representation, acquisition and processing, as well as the relationship between cognates and code-switching. She is currently conducting research with the following language pairs: Spanish-English, Welsh-English, and Welsh-Spanish.
She takes a student-centred approach to teaching, so that the students can engage in active learning. She incorporates the use of multimedia tools in the classroom, and will often combine PowerPoint presentations with video, images, and other web-based tools.
Dr. Carter is an elected member of the Okanagan Senate as a representative of the Joint Faculties for the 2014-2017 Senate term.
