Dr. Carter's research interests include bilingualism, second language acquisition, educational psychology, and the effects of language contact on bilingual speech. Specific research topics have focused on lexical representation, acquisition and processing, as well as the relationship between cognates and code-switching. She is currently conducting research with the following language pairs: Spanish-English, Welsh-English, and Welsh-Spanish.

She takes a student-centred approach to teaching, so that the students can engage in active learning. She incorporates the use of multimedia tools in the classroom, and will often combine PowerPoint presentations with video, images, and other web-based tools.  

Dr. Carter is the Director of the DELE Examination Centre at UBCO and a member of the Okanagan Senate for the 2014-2017 and 2017-2020 Senate terms.
